Members
and supporters of Drift Creek are invited to assist with a variety of
projects to prepare for the summer camp season. There will be spring
cleaning in the lodge and cabins. Painting will be done to refresh
the lodge's main floor gathering area. Work will be done to prepare the former Caretakers' cabin for summer staff housing, including painting and installing insulation and cleaning its kitchen. The old shingle treads on the lodge's exterior stairs need to be replaced and the sidewalks and bridge need to be power-washed.
Outside there will be plenty of
trail maintenance and debris pick-up to catch up on. Several trees
fell across trails during the December storm and it will take several
hands to adequately clear those paths prior to camper arrival. There
will be construction projects on the caretakers' cabin's interior and
exterior.
Volunteers willing to prepare and serve meals are welcome.
BioBlitz during work weekend:
This year, there are numerous ways to assist with Drift Creek Nature Center through helping with the design and development of activities and resources, curriculum planning and photography. Others may be interested in participating in the Drift Creek Nature Center BioBlitz; if so, please visit our webpage for more information.
If you have ever considered volunteering as a substitute host,
please join us during the 2008 Work Weekend. OR if there is another
time that suits better, we would be happy to arrange for that. The
caretaking schedule is very heavy between May and November and
substitutes are appreciated any time. We will accommodate what works
for you.
Obviously
there is always much work to be done. But hopefully our work weekend
brings volunteers together in a way that is both fulfilling and
enjoyable. We will provide delicious home-cooked meals and
complimentary drinks from the new espresso bar. There will be ample
opportunities to catch up with old friends and become acquainted with
new ones. Work weekends are a great way for families to dedicate time
together to a project that benefits campers of all ages and to create
meaningful memories in the process. There will be time on Thursday and Friday nights
to gather around the fire, tell stories, laugh together and just
relax. It is a wonderful opportunity to help prepare the grounds and
facilities for the busy season and log volunteer hours towards a
membership.
Volunteers
are encouraged to notify us of your intention to participate so that
accurate planning can be done for food provisions, tools and supplies.
You can register by either calling 541-992-2556 or emailing Brenda
Kauffman at . We welcome your help and appreciate
your support. The lodge will be open on Thursday evening for folks who wish to get an early start. Food service will be provided beginning with breakfast on Friday morning and continue through lunch on Saturday. A rental group is scheduled to arrive on Saturday afternoon so most projects need to be wrapped up by 4pm on Saturday.
