Surf Camp
July 20 - 25, 2008

  Important Notice:
An additional campsite was rented making space for three additional participants in this camp.

Drift Creek Camp is excited to offer Surf Camp for Grades 7-11.  We will spend the week surfing at Otter Rock and camping at Beverly Beach State Park.  Good food, fun evening activities, solid spiritual input, and lots of surfing are the highlights of this camp.   Click on the link below for a registration form, surf camp is $230, we made an extra effort to keep our costs down this year and as a result surf camp is significantly cheaper than last year.  The cost may seem like a lot when compared with our regular weeks of summer camp, but there are a lot of extra costs associated with surf camp, and when you compare the cost of DCC's surf camp with the cost of other week long, overnight surf camps you will see that we offer an incredible bargain.  You will notice that surf camp is not listed on the registration form.  Just write it in.

This camp is limited to 10 campers, and that is due in large part to the limit of the reserved campsites.  We will have 6 staff persons, not including our surf instructor, who comes in just for the surfing during the day. His name is Dale Wood, and he is an experienced surf instructor who is certified in first aid and swift water rescue. The secondary safety person is our lifeguard, Tsid Gershom, who is certified as well. Beyond that we always have staff in the water with the campers, as well as keeping an eye out from the beach. The six staff includes me (the director), Tsid (the lifeguard), a cook, a female counselor, a male counselor and a pastor. The location of the surfing is Otter Rock State Park, which is probably the safest beginner surf spot on the Oregon Coast. The most dangerous part of surfing, especially while beginning, is not the water but rather your own board and the people around you. We give complete instruction before getting in the water that includes the proper way to fall (to protect yourself from getting hit by your board) and proper etiquette (to be safe in crowded surf). There is no way to eliminate risk while surfing, but we do all that is possible to provide a safe and fun environment for our surf camp. There have been no injuries to campers in the history of DCC's surf camp, which started in 2003, and we will do our best to keep it that way.  Our counselors are well trained and the policies for conduct at this camp are no different than the policies at a regular camp on DCC's campus.   Gear, wetsuits and boards, will be provided. I do, however, encourage people to consider buying their own wetsuits because they are not that expensive if you shop around and having your own wetsuit that fits you just perfect is nice. It is not necessary though, gear will be provided for those who don't have it. If you do shop for a wetsuit it needs to be a full wetsuit, preferably with a built in hood, that is at least a 4/3 mil (thickness of neoprene), and preferably a 5/4/3 or 5/4. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at programsdriftcreek.org.
