Camp Naturalist Application

Responsible to: Drift Creek Camp Directors and Program Director

Summary

The primary purpose of the Drift Creek Camp’s Summer Naturalist is to assist staff to meet the Mission and Vision of Drift Creek Nature Center. 

  • Mission Statement: Developing awareness, appreciation and stewardship of Creation through education, exploration and interaction with nature.
  • Vision Statement:
    • Our goal is to guide children and adults in exploration of the unique ecosystem that exists within the old growth forest surrounding Drift Creek and the nearby marine environment.
    • The Center will foster appreciation for the important ecological contributions of the coastal rain forest, the relationships between the living and nonliving elements and the forest's connection to the marine environment.
    • The Center will raise awareness of human impacts on the forest and will educate visitors to act as stewards of this and other environments.

Responsibilities

  • plan a summer curriculum of nature activities to enrich the camp theme,
  • identify 'points of interest' on the 'hike of the week' and mentor camp staff on trail etiquette and lead all available staff on hike during orientation,
  • plan the designated 'nature activity of the week' and lead all available staff through these activities,
  • orient camp counselors to the pristine natural setting of the Drift Creek watershed and coastal old growth forest and sparkling stream,
  • select field guides and other resources to enhance the activities,
  • lead and coach camp counselors in preparation to lead nature activities,
  • collaborate with program director and camp pastors to assure consistence with theme of the week,
  • consult with arts and crafts leader for nature components to their program,

  • Profound appreciation and respect for God's Creation
  • Experience in providing leadership in a team context
  • Ability to delegate tasks
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach how tasks are to be completed
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Flexibility 
  • A genuine interest in working with and caring for youth in a camp setting
