An eager and talented group of scientists, educators and nature enthusiasts visited Drift Creek Camp, Lincoln City, Oregon, on May 23-24 to identify as many organisms as possible within a 24-hour period of time. We were blessed with good weather and a team of experts in native plants, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, mushrooms, fish, mammals and photography and some inquisitive children. Over 200 species were identified including the endangered marbled murrelet and western toad. Many of the expert naturalists plan to return to DCC during other seasons to continue developing an inventory of the biodiversity in this late succession coastal rainforest ecosystem in the Siuslaw National Forest. We plan to use the information gathered and knowledge gained to enhance, enrich and expand the opportunities for guests of DCC to appreciate, respect and care for nature. You can view the results in a searchable database or static table with links to photographs.
Announcement
The Drift Creek Nature Center invites you to join us for a Bioblitz of the Drift Creek
Camp area Friday and Saturday, May 23-24. You may come anytime on Friday and
stay
the night for an early morning start. This will give you an
opportunity to get settled and oriented to the area and do some
evening and early night observations, if interested.
This event is part of our annual volunteer work weekend and
volunteers will
have free lodging
and meals but you will need to bring your own bedding. To facilitate our planning
, please register here.
This Bioblitz event will continue our process of species
inventorying of the Drift Creek Camp area. A major effort is being
made to include a least one specialist or expert for each group of
species (native plants, trees, lichens, fungus, birds, aquatic life, bugs, etc.) and as many
volunteers as possible. Our goal will be to have a complete inventory
that can be used in our learning and awareness activities and for
future monitoring of the species. For more information on BioBlitz go
to this U.S. Geological website.
For more information on Drift Creek Nature Center, please visit our website. If you are a first-time visitor, you will find these directions important and some information for first time visitors useful.
We hope you can join us! We look forward to
meeting you.
Bruce Flaming and Jon Yoder.
