Statement of Need from Directors

The event featured guest speaker Dr. Luke Gascho of Goshen College's Merry Lea Environmental Center in Indiana. Luke joined us for the 2008 Annual Members' Meeting and shared from his book Creation Care: Keepers of the Earth. He is a wonderful speaker and approaches life with grace and thoughtfulness and a deep appreciation for beauty. His topic for the  event was Creation: A Gift of Love, “God created the universe as an expression of his love, which is a gift to us. The evening will explore how a place like DCC helps people of all ages grow in their love for God--and everything that God loves. Nurturing a sense of wonder enriches our lives in relation to the gifts that God has given. The presentation  highlight ed how experiences at special places, like DCC, foster a holistic understanding of caring for creation as a response to God's gifts.”

The event was hosted by DCC Board Members, who along with many camp stewards in attendance, gathered in celebration of  camp's legacy, which will soon celebrate 50 years!

The folks at Zion generously shared their fellowship hall and served a delicious meal that included chicken cordon bleu, salad, homemade dinner rolls, green beans and dessert.

The purpose was to raise funds for a place that we all love, and approximately $12,000 were raised! For this and you undying support, we are very, very grateful.

As we reach our 50th year there has literally been a lot of water under the bridge.  Many families, campers, schools and congregations have enjoyed the facility and all that such a wonder of God's creation provides. But the reality of being located in a rain forest takes its toll on facilities and it is an expensive place to maintain. Soon the current not-so-reliable phone line will be removed. The Forest Service plans to dismantle the old road along which the line runs. Alternatives are being explored and a new system will need to be installed. We are also working to improve the power system and an additional 24 batteries (at $400 each) need to be purchased as well as additional inverter components. The hope is that eventually these will support a micro-hydro system which could reduce Drift Creek's diesel dependence.

In spite of the work load, and great cost to maintain, let alone improve, facilities, there is much to celebrate when you think of the important role DCC has had on the lives of us all. Thank you for joining in this celebration to make a difference for DCC!
